How to Roll Over Your Old Military / Federal Employee (TSP) 401(k)
Military service members and federal civilian employees participate in the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP), managed by the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board. The TSP's expense ratios are among the lowest in the world, but leaving the military or federal service opens the door to rollover options with broader investment choices.

Military / Federal Employee (TSP) 401(k) Rollover FAQ
When can a military member roll over their TSP?
Military members can roll over their TSP when they separate from service, retire, or reach age 59½ (for in-service withdrawals). Reserve and National Guard members have different rules based on their activation status.
Should I roll my TSP or leave it?
The TSP's fees are extremely low — often lower than comparable IRA options. Rolling out primarily makes sense if you need more investment variety, want to do Roth conversions, or want simpler estate planning. Your advisor will model both scenarios.
