Charles Schwab 401(k) Rollover Guide

Charles Schwab administers 401(k) plans through Schwab Retirement Plan Services and also acquired TD Ameritrade's retirement book. Rolling over a Schwab 401(k) to a Schwab IRA is smooth, but an advisor can help you optimize the investment selection.

How to Roll Over Your Schwab 401(k)

Log in to Schwab's plan portal

Access your employer-sponsored account at workplace.schwab.com. This is distinct from Schwab's retail brokerage at schwab.com.

Request an in-kind or cash rollover

Schwab allows "in-kind" rollovers for some Schwab ETFs and funds, meaning assets transfer without liquidation. Your advisor can advise on which approach is more efficient.

Complete the transfer form

Select "Distributions & Rollovers" and complete the Direct Rollover request. Schwab will coordinate directly with the receiving IRA custodian.

Reallocate in the IRA

Once the rollover is complete, your advisor will help you build a proper allocation — index funds, target-date funds, or a custom mix based on your goals.
